Minimalist. Simple. Versatile.

But don’t let that limit the potential possibilities.

Cabinet drawer and door options have come a long way and similar to technological advances as they are trending to become simpler, yet more functional. And that always brings up the question, well how can you possibly get more for less? I know a saying that has always stuck with myself, and that is that “Bigger things come in smaller packages.” Whether that is in reference to gifts, life, or in this case – Cabinets, it still holds true to an extent. And in this style, getting rid of cabinet handles or knobs altogether can have astonishing effects on both the physical and visual appeal of a kitchen.

Why Handleless?

Physical Appeal.

It’s actually oxymoronic considering handless cabinet (having less accessory) options increase the focus and flow of the room and support the openness of a kitchen. It takes away things for children to pull or hang on and if you have ever caught a piece of clothing on cabinet hardware, then you can understand the frustration and need for this trending design. Not only that, but in family kitchens, it alleviates the worries of younger children hitting their heads or getting into cabinets that are not deemed “children-friendly.”

Visual Appeal.

As mentioned, handleless cabinet options embrace flow through seamless design and create the ultimate sophistication through utter simplicity. With modern kitchens trending heavily in metro and urban areas, it’s hard to ignore the real beauty that comes from a sleek and affluent style. If you’re the type of person that is organized, trendy, a minimalist, or simply like innovation, then handleless cabinets may be more than perfect for you!

The need for cabinets without additional hardware such as handles or knobs was established in Europe when visual aesthetic overtook previous functionality. However, it has all come a long way since then and has actually become just as, if not, more functional than ordinary/traditional cabinetry! There are options for not only drawers, but also cabinet doors, and custom solutions for anything in between.

Instead of stressing over the perfect complement or accent to your cabinets, countertops, and appliances, handleless options remove that stress and maintain the simplicity and visual flow through each kitchen element.  Let me explain a few ways to create the perfect handleless cabinet style for you or your household needs.

What are the options?

True Handleless or True Grip.

By recessing a solid stainless steel frame/channel that runs along the top of the cabinet, it creates a gap larger enough for your fingers to fit either between the cabinet and countertop or various cabinet drawers. This type of grip is complementary to very modern and contemporary kitchens due to the slight accent that the steel creates. Depending on color and finish, it can either be a subtle or stand out accent that continues the sleekness developed via the cabinet faces.

J-Grooves.

Like the name, J-Grooves are a unique type of cabinet style that has a “J” or “L” type cut that makes the faces appear seamless due to the lack of contrast such as in the True Grip cabinets. There isn’t anything in particular that makes one option better than the other, however, it should be noted that the “built-in” nature of the product makes it a more affordable/less expensive option. Something to consider, though, is the possibility of dust or crumb build up in the grooves and the fact that they are not as friendly for long-nailed individuals. As with all cabinets, the choice comes down to personal preference, visual appeal, and affordability.

Blum Tip-On Hardware.

“Tip-on” hardware is one of the handleless options that has skyrocketed over the past years in part due to technological advances and the increasing normalization of such engineering. They are essentially a spring-loaded, magnetic hardware that allows for you to give it a bump or push in order for it to open a cabinet drawer, door, or garage. This hardware is most popularly made by Blum, who have innovated and completely changed the functionality of handleless cabinets. They have multiple options that fit discretely in the box of the cabinet and have been designed to not compromise any of the interior storage space. Many cabinets today have tip-on hardware options and by being able to buy the hardware independent of the cabinets, it’s possible to match your personalized style with this functional, handleless option.
